Federal Institute for Human Rights – an accessible website for everyone
Client: Federal Institute for Human Rights (FIRM)
Opdracht: Federaalinstituutmensenrechten.be
Go live: July 2022
Industry: Government
Label: Anysurfer label obtained in 2025
The Federal Institute for Human Rights wanted to create a central online platform where everyone can find reliable information about human rights in Belgium. The website needed to be clear, well structured, and accessible to all users, regardless of disability or device.
In 2024 and 2025, the website underwent a comprehensive Anysurfer audit based on the WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines. A selection of pages was tested on criteria such as text alternatives, keyboard navigation, colour contrast and heading structure.
Approach: optimisation and inclusion
The initial audits revealed that some elements still required improvement: certain images lacked appropriate alternative text, drop-down menus were difficult to navigate using a keyboard, and keyboard focus was not always clearly visible.
Together with FIRM, we worked through a structured improvement process, focusing on:
- Clear alternative text for images
- Logical and intuitive navigation
- Accessible headings and content structure
- Easy-to-use menus and interactive elements
The result: Anysurfer label and an inclusive website
Thanks to these improvements, the FIRM website fully complies with the WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines. In November 2025, the website was awarded the official Anysurfer label, guaranteeing that all users — regardless of disability or device — have equal access to the information.
The website now acts as a digital extension of FIRM’s mission: human rights information that is clear, reliable and fully accessible. Visitors can navigate easily, interact smoothly and find the information they need, while the design remains professional and user-friendly.
Accessibility pays off
From analysis to launch and beyond, this project demonstrates that accessibility, content and design can go hand in hand. The FIRM website is a strong example of how digital inclusion can be achieved without compromising on design or user experience.
